Katherine Bacu grew up in the small town of Felton in Southern Delaware. She currently resides there and graduated in 2021 with her BFA and Minor in Art History from University of Delaware. She has always enjoyed a craft and currently works at the Delaware Public Archives as an Archivist. She enjoys historical art and the impressionist movement due to the beautification of rural landscapes that remind her of home. Her art utilizes bright colors and abstract forms to modernize these landscapes to create an optimistic view of everyday things. She has had her work in multiple exhibitions at University of Delaware and the National Arts Program Delaware State Exhibitions. She is actively working on painting, crafting, and focusing on enjoying the small joys of life.
The true joy that is found in experiences is through attention to detail. I use oil paint because of the pigmented colors and raised brushstrokes I could achieve. I use bright saturated colors that make me feel as if I’m painting the world in a new light. The subjects I’m most passionate about are everyday landscapes and little moments; I try to highlight the details, so the viewer is forced to think about the work's subject and relate it to themselves. I work very improvisational and gestural. Provoked by the exercise of abstraction, I portray the mood of a piece based on my instinctual reaction to the subject. I find it deeply rewarding to juxtapose the realistic atmosphere and magnify the movement and emotion through color and texture. Playing with the boundaries of the paint and the subject matter. My work aims to allow my audience to see the world through that different lens. I want people to stop and notice the intimate nuances in their everyday lives. I find myself constantly rediscovering how art has shaped my view of the world, forcing me to see things closer and more beautiful than I had before. Hopefully, encouraging the viewer to do the same.
Stay tuned! Big things to come!
